What To Talk About

Sometimes it's hard to know what to say or what questions to ask when getting to know someone. On this page, you will find conversation topics and question that you can ask to get to know someone better. These are not organized in any particular order.

College students had their conversations recorded and analyzed by researchers. Subjects who reported the greatest amount of satisfaction spent only 10% of their conversation on small talk.

Kindness Counts. Point out nice things the other person has mentioned, nice acts the person has done, or good things on the news. Be upbeat, and forget those lemons in life. Even in email a person can shout, by using all capital letters. So show manners and kindness.

Ask lots of questions, but the key is to listen to the answers and form new questions around those. Even if the other person asks you a question, you answer and follow it with a question.

Conversation Topics:

CHILDHOOD - Ask your partner what he or she was like as a kid. Did she make friends easily? What kind of games did he like to play? Did he have trouble in school? Childhood memories make for fun conversations, but they can also lend insight into how your main squeeze became the person he or she is today.

FAMILY LIFE - Knowing a person's upbringing and relationship with his or her parents is paramount to understanding his current attitude toward family. If you're even slightly contemplating a future with this person, it might help to ask how well they get along with their parents. Why does she resent her mother? Why is he closer to his sisters than to his brothers? How does she handle family gatherings?

FEARS AND INSECURITIES - What makes you wake up with gray hairs? What worries you? What do you want to improve in yourself? What skeletons are in your closet? In being vulnerable, you risk judgement, but more importantly, you chance being understood.

CURRENT EVENTS - Thanks to the overflow of information, it's nearly impossible to stay up-to-date on everything going on around us. Here's where teamwork comes into play: Ask your partner about his interests, be they economics or regional politics, and see if you can't learn a thing or two. Who knows, maybe you'll help him develop an interest in international affairs or science news.

TV AND MOVIES - Compared to politics and personal fears, entertainment might seem pretty shallow, but you can still learn a lot about someone by asking what their favorite movies are. Do they like classics? Comedy? Are they into documentaries?

THE FUTURE - Talking about the future can be nerve-wracking. While we're not saying you should pressure your partner into talking about his plans for marriage and children, we do believe that whether he openly talks about them or you ask directly, you should know his dreams, goals, and aspirations. What is he working toward? What drives him to succeed? Where does he see himself in five years? Someone who desires growth and is not afraid of the unknown is surely dynamic enough to deserve you.

PAST RELATIONSHIPS - This is a touchy one because no one wants to hear the person they're with spouting sonnets about an ex. There is, of course, a difference between longing for (or being bitter over) the past and simply acknowledging what happened. When you are in the early stages of getting to know someone, it's usually not a good idea to talk about past relationships. Save this topic for later.

LIFE GOALS / AMBITIONS - Real love requires goals and aspirations, both individually and as a couple. You have to have plans and dreams, and agree on the future. You must help each other fulfill your hopes and dreams as individuals and as a couple. Figure out what you've always wanted to do—and do it. Find out what your partner wants in life and out of life. Figure out, early on, if you can and will support each other in achieving everything you've always wanted. It is important that you figure this out early on.

GRUDGES / COMMON ENEMIES - "I try to get on the same team as her. And the easiest way to do that is to find a common enemy that we could both talk shit about."

AVOID:

When communicating online, don't start your message by saying "Hello beautiful," or "Hey babe," or "You're so pretty!" Using this language is the fastest way to push yourself into the friend zone forever. Women do not like when men who don't know them very well comment about their looks.

Do not interrogate your date. The best tool is to simply listen to them, be yourself, and enjoy the evening, and you’ll see the person reveal himself or herself to you.

Don't use confrontation. Don't discuss strange topics. Don't talk too much. People who speed-talk, interrogate, brag, blab the family secrets or don't allow you to have one single moment's peace of mind are control freaks. It's like they think that if they are not talking, that they don't somehow exist.

Keep swearing, unkind remarks, and prejudice out of your communications.

Not maintaining eye contact when you talk is a mistake.

If you call her, think first! She may have voicemail on. If you're leaving a voicemail, don't leave a second or third message. Keep your message short, and don't forget to leave your name and phone number.

Accentuate the positive. When first meeting someone, don't talk about bad things about you.

ON FIRST DATE, DO NOT ASK, "Will you marry me?"

ON FIRST DATE, DO NOT SAY, "I think we're going to be great friends." - this will put you in the friend zone forever.

ON FIRST DATE, DO NOT LIE OR EMBELLISH THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE.

ON FIRST DATE, DON'T TELL "My family is crazy!" Don't talk about the drama that happened in your family--divorce, etc.

ON FIRST DATE, DON'T SAY, "Life just isn't working out for me right now"

ON FIRST DATE, DON'T TALK ABOUT YOUR INCOME

ON FIRST DATE, DON'T TALK ABOUT YOUR LAST RELATIONSHIP

ON FIRST DATE, DON'T SHARE ANY SECRETS. On a first date, you have the right to withhold almost every unflattering fact until it is established that you like each other and want to pursue things.

ON FIRST DATE, DON'T SAY "I'm recovering from..."

ON FIRST DATE, DON'T SAY "I hate my job." or express that you have a negative outlook on life.

DON'T TALK ABOUT:
- very personal questions
- Her income
- Her past. She may be hurt.
- Her brothers and sisters.
- Sex. Stay away from this subject unless she goes there first.
- Religion - Basic religious values are fine to chat about, but digging too deep can ruin potential.
- Politics
- Don't tell too many jokes, because you won't know anything about each other. Just have a good time and that's it.
- Excessive technical information
- Your Experiences Online.
- Your Health Issues
- Your Pets
- Criticism of Your Date. The last thing you want to do on a first date is pick apart the person who's taking you out.
- Don’t argue with her.
- NO offensive jokes
- Don’t be rude
- Don't tease her.
- Don't pretend to be someone
- Don't talk about what you did today unless she asks.
- Don't talk about a second date while you're still on the first date.
- Don’t tell that you like her or you love her. A simple phrase like “I had a great time” will do or “I was a pleasure to meet you”
- Don’t ask, “So, when can we go out again?" Instead, “can I call you again?” is more appropriate
- Don't say any stories that relate to any negative experiences.
- NEVER ask, "How do you like me so far?"

DO NOT SAY:
"You behave exactly like your mother." Don't compare her to her mother!

If she talks fast, you talk fast. Mirroring each other on a first date creates the impression of being on the same wavelength. Pay attention not only to what your bodies are doing but also to how your speech patterns match. If he speaks really fast and you’re more mellow, for example, it throws you out of sync.

Putting "YOU" first gets a much better response, especially when you're asking for a favor, because it pushes the asker's pride button. It's better to say, "You look great in that suit" than "I like your suit."

here are some people who are nice enough but steal. Some people are outwardly respectful while inwardly making fools of everyone. Some people are brave on the outside yet cowardly on the inside. Some people do their best but are not loyal. 1. RIGHT AND WRONG. - Question them concerning right and wrong, to observe their ideas. Morality affects actions. Your view of right and wrong shapes the way you behave. What may seem wrong to you may be perfectly right for someone else and vice versa. This may lead to clashes or problems at inopportune moments. To avoid this, it is good to know about a person’s morality. This is especially so for those who are close to you personally or professionally. By listening carefully to their ideas about right and wrong, you will know more about their nature. 2. ARGUING STYLE. - Exhaust all their arguments, to see how they change. Watching the way someone argues reveals a lot about his or her nature. To what lengths would he or she go to win? How do they present their arguments? What kind of tactics do they use? Do they bother to find common ground? Or must they prove they are right while the other is wrong? Are they calm and composed or angry and agitated? The character a person displays in an argument easily translates to other aspects of their lives. 3. CREATING STRATEGY. - Consult with them about strategy, to see how perceptive they are. When you consult someone on strategy, note his or her approach and the factors considered. Do they focus on the problem or the solution? Is the given solution a short-term or a long-term one? What is the cost involved for the solution? A perceptive person is wise and can provide deep insights into any situation. If you can find someone with such wisdom, you should keep him or her close by. If a person is not perceptive, you should be careful about seeking their advice. 4. IN TROUBLE. - Announce that there is trouble, to see how brave they are. It is easy to be seemingly brave when all is well. But only trouble reveals the truly brave from the cowards. Does this person have the moral courage to act rightly in the face of opposition, shame, scandal or discouragement? How do they manage fear, pain, uncertainty or intimidation? Do they crack under the pressure and give up? Or do they press on until the end against all odds? Whenever there is trouble, always take note of a person’s bravery in the midst of it. 5. GETTING DRUNK. - Get them drunk, to observe their nature. Most of us hide our true selves from others for various reasons. It could be due to a need for approval or a need to conform or just plain rigid self-control. As such, it is hard to know how a person truly thinks and feels. If a chance arises to observe a person’s nature without inhibitions, seize it. Having deeper insights into their nature will spare you from unexpected shocks. 6. SHARING THE CREDITS. - Present them with the prospect of gain, to see how modest they are. The prospect of gain reveals a lot about a person, especially in a work related context. Does he share the credit or gain with others, or does he seek to claim it all for himself? Is he proud or modest about the gain? Some people may let a gain go to their heads and cloud their judgment. In doing so, they might ignore all advice and bring about disasters later on. At the very least, they can become insufferable and alienate others. If you notice a lack of modesty early on, be careful in your dealings with this person. 7. TRUSTWORTHINESS. - Give them a task to do within a specific time, to see how trustworthy they are. Actions speak louder than words. It is easy to proclaim one’s trustworthiness, but quite another matter to prove it. To test a person’s trustworthiness, assign him a task with a deadline and observe the way he carries it out. If he succeeds, that is well and good. But if he fails, note the reasons given and the circumstances involved. This objective assessment will give you deep insights into a person’s trustworthiness.

* ASK ABOUT FRIENDS. - We usually surround ourselves with people like ourselves. * ASK ABOUT FAMILY. - Does he speak well of his family his mother? What is he saying about his / her ex? Is he speaking negative about them? Does he want marriage and children? (He may get up and run, but you do need to know this so you are not just waiting around for someone to make up their mind about marrying you later. If he or she is slow in answering then he or she is avoiding something. * VALUES. - How does he/she speak, does he/she speak with foul language. Do they take things, steal extra change that is not theirs. What are his/her morals. Most important watch his/her reactions in public and behavior and he/she will show their true colors. * JOBS - What do they do? Have they held onto a job, and for how long? What are your goals in life? This will allow you to see if he/she may have a good head on his/her shoulders. See if he/she has plans and hopes for the future. * FINANCES - Tricky question, but you must find a point to ask the person you may be getting serious about, you don’t want a person that is in debt with every company, and his paycheck is from “hand to mouth”. No money in his/her pocket. Too much spending. * RELATIONSHIP - Are you married / or do have a girlfriend/boyfriend? What is the relationship? Are they still seeing each other? Is there a child involved, are there any child support of alimony he / she must pay? * HOBBIES - What do they do on their free time? Do they have time for themselves reading, golfing or is it by the TV with the guys drinking beer. Do they have intellectual desires, goals? * COMPLAINING? - Do they complain a lot? Do they complain about having to work or going to work? Are they complain of how expenses items are, the meal etc? Do they say rude things about the ex girlfriends, family members?

In the first or second date, simply ask a potential partner to describe “what is your vision of an ideal love relationship?” Then make sure you actually listen to the answer. Don’t fantasize how you will change him/her. If you have doubts about the sincerity of your potential partner’s story, ask about her relationship history. What kind of questions need to be asked? Your inquiry should include such details as these: sexual lifestyle choices including attitudes about monogamy, swinging, homosexuality, and pornography? She had assumed that once they were married he would stop, because obviously husbands and wives must spend every night together, right? For example, you want children. How critical is this? Can you meet your needs for children with an extended family or step children? Is having a loving partner more important than kids? In order to make a good choice both of you must be honest with each other without judging each other as “wrong.” Always keep reminding yourself that many acceptable lifestyle choices are available in the Twenty-first Century, and you are looking for someone who shares that particular vision that is yours. If you could do anything now, what would you do? Why? Do you plan on retiring? If so, when? How do you feel about it? Do you have any favorite stories from your work life? Do you believe in extraterrestrials or life on other planets? - Present yourself. Tell about your name, age, when is your Birthday... but don't be scarce when writing about these as you might lack the core of your presentation. You have to be chatty and develop it in a way it sounds interesting, not a mere formality. - Tell about the place you come from, where you were born/grew up, were you live now if you moved, or even the places you lived along the years. At this point you can add some facts: relate why the place you were born, the place(s) you live(d) in are famous for... This way your penpal not only gets to know the name of a city somewhere in the world, but why this place is famous or which features are typical of this area. - Talk about your family. Your husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, children, parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, cousins... Maybe you have a favourite member of the family whom you share most of your adventures and you trust blindly. Perhaps you would like to tell your pal about this special person in your family. Here you also can write about your pets if you have any. After all they are like family members as well. - Mention about your studies or your work. Maybe you are into the same field and you are interested in discussing with your pal about it in future letters. You can also tell about the places where you studied/worked, talk about anecdotes of those years, how you are living/lived your times as a student or at work. - Write about what you like doing, your hobbies and your interests. Even if we don't like the same stuff, it is interesting to share this information with your penfriend. Perhaps you discover a new liking you had never heard about before... I find nice to mention likings in general, but, for instance, if you like music, TV series or movies I recommend you not to write a list of all those singers/bands/TV series/films you like. It is good if you mention about a favourite one and then develop this topic in the next letters. Nevertheless, listings of such stuff are quite boring to read in my opinion. - Develop some of those likings individually. If you like penpalling, you can write about how you discovered letter writing, how long you have been into it, how you met your first pals, which are your expectations regarding the new penfriendship... If you are interested in music, mention which kind of music you like the most, where you usually listen to music, at which moment of the day, maybe you even play an instrument and your pal does as well... If you are into sports do tell if you practice any, which ones are your favourite to practice and the ones you follow, which sportmen/sportwomen you like lots and are a fan of... If you think a bit you can write every detail about everything you are into. This way your pal will find your letter much more interesting to read, instead getting into listings full of stuff which surely are very boring to go through. - Name some random stuff you might like, besides your hobbies. Sometimes we discover that another person in the other corner of the world likes rainy days, walking in the woods or your favourite fruit! - If you feel like it, describe yourself. It is not easy, but probably your future penpal would like to hear about your personality traits and how you think you are. - Perhaps you would like to advance some of your dreams, ideas, hopes, points of view, opinions or future expectations in your life. Maybe you share some of them and both of you develop these topics in next letter exchanges... Still there are some other topics you might write about in a first letter to a new penfriend. It is not necessary to write a lot about every little characteristic because you have plenty of letters to develop each of those topics in a more detailed way. However, as I said at the beginning, writing too less is as bad as writing too much! Everything should be done in a reasonable manner and remember that writing a meaningful first letter is in your hand! What’s your favorite TV station and why? One reason, as the new 2013 Fidelity Investment Couples Retirement Study suggests, is that married couples who aren’t yet retired disagree a lot about how, when and where they’ll retire. The survey found that: About four in 10 couples (38%) disagree as to the lifestyle they expect to live in retirement. Some 36% of couples don’t agree on, or don’t know where, they plan to live in retirement; that’s up from 33% in Fidelity’s 2011 survey. And a third of couples approaching retirement (32%) don’t agree on whether they will continue working in retirement. Are you a vegetarian? Would you say you read into things too much?
